Will My Blood Test Always Be Positive for H Pylori

I got tested for this a few years ago, and it turns out that I did in fact test positive. My doctor then put me on two months worth of medicine, the medicine to keep the acids under control I had a hard time with, it made me dizzy, because I am a school bus driver I could not take it. My doctor seem to think that would be fine.

Recently, I have been experiencing problems again. Last year in July of 2010, I had a colonoscopy and they found an ulcer, could this come back? could this ulcer in my colon be caused from the h. pylori? You speak of eradication, how come you always test positive? At least this information is what my doctor tells me.

Thank you!

Your doctor is wrong wrong wrong..

Hi Tiffany,

Your doctor is incorrect. You do not continue to test positive after H pylori treatment IF you eradicated the bacteria. Eradication means just that- eradication. Getting rid of it completely. Curing the infection entirely. It's GONE, baby, gone. Therefore you do not test positive for it after it's gone (after you've given it time to get out of your system).

You need to get tested again to see if you still have it or if you got it back. After successful treatment, you will test negative. It may take months to years in order to get the antibodies and antigens out of your system, but if the treatment is successful, you WILL test negative at some point. If you continue to test positive, then eradication FAILED and you are still infected and you need to get treated again.

Doctors MAY be starting to think that you always test positive because they are having such poor success getting rid of H pylori due to people's poor immune systems and the high antibiotic resistance that H pylori has. But you CAN eradicate H pylori completely and you will not test positive if you do eliminate it. However, eliminating the antibodies in your blood can take time. In the meantime, you would ideally do an H Pylori Stool Antigen Test. This is very accurate and can be used to test for eradication within 1 to 2 months. It's a much better test than a blood test, when used after treatment since blood antibodies can hang around for a long time.
