Vitamin D2
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune System Queen

Yes, Vitamin D2 is all that doctors prescribe because prescription medications must be patented and drug companies cannot patent natural substances. D2 can be made synthetically, and hence can be patented into a drug. Vitamin D3 is a natural substance and cannot be patented, but it is the one that you want to use.

One thing that you are assuming is that you are actually GETTING vitamin d, but most people get almost none. Are you sunbathing or eating cod liver 3 times per week? If not, then why do you believe that you are actually GETTING any vitamin d in the first place? You probably aren't since there are almost no Foods With Vitamin D and almost no one sunbathes.

So, what you should do is follow the instructions to bring your vitamin d levels up to optimal as I outline on my Vitamin D Therapy page.

Prescription grade vitamin D3 available
by: William B. Grant

Bio Tech Pharma Cal in Fayetteville, AR, offers a Bio Tech Pharma D3 in 50,000 IU dosage - water soluble in a gel capsule - that is pharmaceutical grade and can be prescribed. It costs considerably less than vitamin D2 and is more effective at raising 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and improving health.

Kerri's Note: Maybe a doctor can prescribe it and you can get it through a pharmacy, I've never heard of anyone doing so, but it's just a supplement. You can get it from Amazon. Pharmaceutical Grade is just a statement of high quality, it does not mean that it can be prescribed by your doctor, obtained by a pharmacist or that your insurance will pay for it. They might, I'm not saying that they don't, but I do think it unlikely. And there is no 'need' for a 50,000 IU capsule just because that is what doctors do, one can just take 10 capsules a week of a 5000 IU capsule, or 5 capsules of 10,000 IU's per week. There is no need for people to obsess about finding 50,000 IU capsules just because that is what their doctor prescribed and they (correctly) want to get Vitamin D3 instead.
