WHAT ARE SAFE HIGH DOSAGES for Vitamin D Supplements

by Robert

Seems like we are seeing more indications of benefits from Vitamin D in many respects in the research coming out. One vendor is promoting taking a 2,500 Units supplement daily.

I see in research where higher does than that have been used in some of the studies. But FDA has Recommended Minimum Daily at only 400 units.

Is the 2,500 a safe supplemental dosage?

What is safe....

Hi Robert,

I LOVE this question because safety is sooooo relative. So, what I think that you REALLY mean by 'safe' is, "Is that too high of a dose?"

More About Vitamin D

But I'm going to answer your question literally, Is that dose safe?

So, if you were out in the desert when it was 102 degrees with no shade, would 1 quart of water per day be 'safe'? Of course, you are not going to overdose on the water, but over time, with only one quart of water each day you are going to get more and more dehydrated each day and eventually get sick.

Well, Vitamin D is actually like that. You can take 2500 IU's per day WITHOUT ever overdosing. In fact, you can take 10,000 IU's per day, every day for YEARS without overdosing.

But actually, researchers are finding that 2500 IU's per day is probably close to about HALF what you should be taking for your Vitamin D Requirements in order to stay healthy.

So, actually, like in our water example- taking 2500 IU's per day is NOT necessarily safe over the long term because that LOW of a dose could leave you with the VERY SUBTLE Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency over the long term.

So, my answer to you is "NO", taking 2500 IU's of Vitamin D every day is NOT really safe. Somewhere between 3500 to 5000 IU's would be FAR safer.
