Vitamin D While Getting Sun Exposure

More About Vitamin D

Well, the answer to that is, "It Depends". Most people go to Hawaii to hang out on the beaches and play in the water, but if you are going there to study the night time stars, stay up all night and sleep during the day and don't get sun- then I would still take your supplements.

I'm not meaning to be silly, but everyone has their own idea of 'Vacation' and if that includes getting lots of sun on the beach AND it's sunny, then you'll be fine without taking supplements.

In fact, if you get full body sun exposure everyday and you are light skinned, then you can probably not take your supplements for the rest of the month. But you'll just have to figure it out each day. The amount that researchers have determined that a young person with light skin would get with full body sun exposure to the point BEFORE they get burned, is about 20,000 IU's.

HOWEVER, do remember that washing with soap after sun exposure will wash off the oils that carry the vitamin d and will prevent you from absorbing it.

If you MUST shower, just rinse off and quickly wash your 'critical areas'. But if you wash everyday while you are there, like most people do, you'll get a lot less benefit. This may be the reason that a study of young people in Hawaii who got 12 hours of sun exposure every week still showed that they were deficient!

Have fun. Where will you be going?
