Even though there is a LOT of evidence that Vitamin D deficiency is a BIG problem after gastric bypass - as well as Vitamin B 12 deficiency- doctors are just not clued into this and simply don't look for this problem.
The problem is that after gastric bypass surgery, you may not be able to absorb the vitamin D very well and may need much higher doses than other people with vitamin D deficiency. You may want to talk to your doctor about taking Vitamin D 3 over PRESCRIPTION vitamin D which is FAR inferior to Vitamin D 3!
But an EXCELLENT idea for you to get more Vitamin D is to get full body midday sunlight to the point BEFORE you get burned. For you, this may be one of the only ways for you to really get your levels up consistently. You don't say where you live, but if you live North of San Francisco or Boston, you will not get ANY Vitamin D in the winter anyway, so this will not be practical for you.
You need to make sure that your doctor is retaking your Vitamin D levels every 3 months until your Vitamin D level is between 50 to 80 ng/ml, the 'optimal' levels recommended by many Vitamin D researchers.
Keep up with making sure that your vitamin D levels get up into the optimal range and check into taking Vitamin D 3 Supplements instead of the Vitamin D 2 supplements that your doctor is likely to be prescribing.
