Is Balding a Symptom of Vitamin D Deficiency
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

I'm afraid to have to tell you this, but no, baldness and/or thinning hair is not a Symptom of Vitamin D Deficiency that I know of.

But if you think that you might have Vitamin D Deficiency because of other reasons, then you should get a Vitamin D Level to check it out.

Vitamin D and hair loss
by: Anonymous

Actually my Nure Practitioner who specializes in endocrinolgy just told me low levels of Vit. D DOES play a role in unexplained hair loss in women.

My Vit. D blood level came in at 9. Yes, 9. I was immediately put on supplements. Although I'm not seeing NEW growth in hair, I have seen a drastic reduction in hair loss.

(I've been on the supplements for 7 weeks now). I no longer have a "fur ball" in the drain when I shower and I don't lose 300+ hairs when I brush my hair. I'm hoping I will eventually see my hair get thicker, but even if I don't, I'm thrilled that it's not getting thinner.

My hair is thinning. I just turned 40. I asked my dr. He asked me about my stress level, tested my hormones, thyroid, and told me vitamin D deficiancies can cause this as well. All tests came back normal, except I have a vitamin D deficiancy. They put my on a supplement of 2000 units and will recheck in 3 months. I'm hoping it will improve in the next 3-6 months. So according to him, it is most likely the reason my hair has thinned. I'm using cod liver oil as part of the 2000 units.

Hmmm. Just my 2 cents as well..

I would love it if you asked your doctor where he got his information on this because there is NO RESEARCH on this. So the fact that he is saying this means that he is just completely speculating.

And it's interesting that a doctor who tells you that your hair is thinning because of vitamin d deficiency despite the fact that there is no evidence is giving you a totally and completely inadequate dose of vitamin d to correct your deficiency.

When you ask him about the evidence that he has for vitamin D and hair loss, you might also want to ask him how he decided to recommend 2000 IU's of vitamin d per day when the 'standard of care' for vitamin D deficiency treatment is over 7000 IU's per day.

You might also want to ask him why he is putting you at risk of vitamin d side effects by not also giving you magnesium and vitamin k.
