I have a low Vitamin D blood level along with a High Thyroid Level. I'm told a normal thyroid level should be between 4.0 to 4.5., mine is 12.5.

Is vitamin d deficiency related to autoimmune thyroid disease or fibromyalgia? can a deficiency be corrected and the disease not progress? i have a level of 17, how much vitamin d should I take daily?

Hi Tiger Lily,
I've actually discussed autoimmune thyroid several times in other questions, so I'll refer you to those in the discussions below entitiled:
I believe that there is a lot stronger connection between Autoimmune Thyroid and Gluten- and I talk about it here:
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Gluten Sensitivity
And here's where I discuss the Vitamin D and Thyroid Connection:
Vitamin D and Thyroid.
As far as how much vitamin d you should take, you should get your Vitamin D Level checked and then follow the guidelines on the Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment page to determine how much you should take.
Everyone is individual and so there is no one-sized-fits-all dose that I can recommend to you without first knowing what your level is.
Hope that this helps!

I have hypothyroidism and vitamin D deficiency. I also know several people who suffer with the same two problems? Is there a link?
ANSWER:
Hi Terri,
The only real link between vitamin d deficiency and thyroid issues is that people with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (also called autoimmune thyroiditis) can be more prone to having those autoimmune antibodies that lead to hypothyroidism if they are Vitamin D deficient. But I have seen NO studies linking the two together.
My guess is that there are a LOT of people with thyroid issues and those people see endocrinologists who are much more likely to be checking vitamin d levels than regular doctor are.
And also, people with thyroid issues have probably not had a lot of energy for a long time and are not as likely to be avid exercisers who get out in the sun on a regular basis because of their fatigue.
But with 85% of the population being vitamin d deficient, nearly everyone who has ANY health problem at all has vitamin d deficiency. So, if you had your appendix out ten years ago, you would be likely to find an amazing correlation between people who have had their appendix out AND have vitamin d deficiency. Etc, etc.
So, if anyone can find some studies to prove me wrong on that, I'd be happy to see them, but I actually HAVE been keeping my eye out for them because quite a few people have asked the same thing. But I haven't seen any studies so far.
Sorry!

Does vitamin d help with hypothyroidism?
Dr Oz says it is a possible help.

I've answered this question a few times already Matty. You can read the questions and answers on the Vitamin D and Thyroid page.
And pretty much, Dr. Oz is right, from my experience it MAY help, but there is no good evidence that I've seen that it DOES help- at least in studies. So, until their ARE studies done, then we won't really know for sure.

Can Vitamin D3 supplements correct autoimmune thyroid disease in a person with no thyroid antibodies?
There are various studies online showing that Vitamin D3 has a 'tolerogenic' effect on the immune system (regulatory T cells). ScienceDaily has called Vitamin D3 natures 'antibiotic' vitamin?

Is there a link between vitamin D deficiency and Graves Disease? Also, can multiple pregnancies contribute to it? I live in Greece and there is certainly no lack of sun here, except I have had 4 pregnancies is 4 years and honestly have not spent hardly any time in the sun even in the summer time.
Thank you!!
Oh, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroid and Graves Disease recently.

I recently tested for a Vitamin D level of 12.3 and have been taking 50,000 IU for 6 weeks now with no change in symptoms. They seem to be getting worse and other symptoms are appearing too. I have a family history of thyroid disease and I did some research and I have 90% of the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
Can these be related or are my symptoms related to Vitamin D? Gaining weight, freezing, exhausted, high cholesterol, hair/skin rough course, terrible joint pains, Tendonitis in knee, starting periods again after 1 year of no period in menopause, can't remember anything, swelling in hands and around eyes.

I am so confused. I have had chonic pain since 2006 when I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Even though my family doctors (3 since 2000) checked my thyroid regularly, I was always told it was normal. Then in 2008 an Allergist did some extensive bloodwork and found an extremely high amount of thyroid antibodies and I was subsequently also diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
I was already experiencing hypothyroid symptoms. I hooked up with an Endocrinologist who explained that my thyroid levels were not normal and that the average family practice doctor falsely believes test results of 4.0 to 6.0 are normal. She said my thyroid was about 75% non functional and I am on .88mcg synthroid. The problem is, two years later, I still have no energy, have exercise intolerance, and am only pain free while lying down.
A few months ago , my Endocrinologist tested my Vitamin D level and stated it was very low. I am on D3, 2500 iu's per day. Have you found any correlation with Vitamin D deficiency and Fibromyalgia and/or Hypothyroidism.
How long will it take to feel better while on the D3 supplement?
