Third Time Having H Pylori

Hi there this is my 3rd dose of triple antibiotics in 4 months and and did a test the other day and it has came back still positive ive to go c my gp nxt week but im so worried as ive never ever heard of anybody still having it after 3 sets of different antibiotics have u ever heard of it taken so long to get rid off and do u think theres anything else they can do.

Hi Paula,

Lots of people are unable to clear H pylori and continue to have H pylori after 3 sets of antibiotics.

This is a fairly common problem and actually only 1/3 of people eradicate H pylori on the first try. In fact, that is why they have to do 'triple therapy' from the outset, because so many people fail to eradicate H pylori that it takes 3 medications to eradicate it now rather than one.

Also, it could be that you ARE eradicating H pylori and that you are getting it back from someone you have close contact with that is infected and may not even have symptoms.

But if you are truly not actually eradicating it, there are a couple of reasons for this. One of them is that H pylori is becoming more resistant to antibiotics the more that antibiotics are being used. Another reason is that your immune system is too weak to fight off the H pylori. You see, antibiotics only do part of the work, but your immune system has to take care of the rest.

You got H pylori in the first place because of a failure of your immune system to fight off the infection. Simply taking antibiotics not only won't solve this problem, but it might even make it worse by weakening your immune system even further!

So, interestingly, your question was "
