Vitamin D Dosage
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Kendra,

So, I'm SOOO glad that your doctor FINALLY diagnosed your vitamin d deficiency. If you read my page on Fibromyalgia and Vitamin D, you'll see that the symptoms of vitamin d deficiency and the Symptoms of Fibromyalgia are SOOO similar that doctors, in my opinion, should not be ALLOWED to diagnosis anyone with Fibromyalgia before they 'rule-out' Vitamin D Deficiency first.

So, while it's great that you have found out now, please refer people to this site so that other people INSIST on getting their vitamin d levels checked before or when they have Fibromyalgia.

But that is not the ONLY problem that gets misdiagnosed as 'Fibromyalgia'. Take a look at my Fibromyalgia Cause page to make sure that you take care of the other problems that are contributing to your symptoms.

OK. Now, onto the vitamin d. So, your dose of 150,000 IU's per week (3 prescription pills) is just about 20,000 IU's per day. And it is fine to simply replace that with the exact same dosage of Vitamin D3 Supplements. You can either take 20,000 IU's per day or spread them out to 3 times per week if you wish, it makes no difference.

Although, if he plans on getting a level in 6 weeks, that's just simply too soon. Your numbers will still be too low and if he's not familiar with the actions of vitamin d then it's likely that he'll panic and think that you are not absorbing well and do some crazy unnecessary tests.

So, ideally, you would (continued below....)

simply drop down to 10,000 IU's per day after the six weeks are up and continue at that dose for another 6 weeks. That will give you 3 months after you started treatment. A MUCH better time span to get your levels up and no one panics about low levels because they simply did them too soon.

Make sure that you do NOT start a maintenance dose until your level is in the 'Optimal' range as outlined on my Vitamin D Levels page. PLEASE ignore the numbers on the lab report. They are NOT the ones that you want to use.

Then, once they are in range, you can drop down to a maintenance dose as outlined on the Vitamin D Dosage page.

Hope that this helped, and I hope that you also make sure that you read the rest of my Fibromyalgia pages so that you can learn that you do NOT need to suffer with this improperly diagnosed illness.
