Magnesium Blood Test by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!
Hi John,
I do agree with your thought processes and both Thiazide diuretics and verapamil cause Magnesium Depletion that could be one of the factors leading to both his osteoporosis and his Atrial Fibrillation.
Unfortunately, you're stuck between a rock and a hard place and have a tough decision to make if your doctor won't go along with your desires.
So, you said that they did a Magnesium Blood Level, but you didn't say what the results were. I'll assume that they were normal since your doctor doesn't want you to give your dad a supplement.
There IS an accurate magnesium test called an Exatest at Exatest.com. Unfortunately, they will only send the tests to doctor's offices. So, you can ask your doctor about it, but if he's not open to it....
So, since your doctor objected to your giving your dad a supplement, I can't tell you to go ahead. And there may be other factors why your doctor doesn't want your dad to have magnesium- for instance, is his kidney function normal?
So, it's best to have your doctor at least not in opposition to what you are doing or give you a better reason why he shouldn't be supplemented- as I would think that not eating much food would be an ever better argument FOR supplementation.
If your doctor won't cooperate, then you can always try to find a doctor that WILL...
