my MCV & MCH keep rising & my MCHC is low

by Karen
(Clinton, TN, USA)

I am 67 yrs old and getting concerned that my blood levels keep changing and to my reasoning after reading this site, not necessarily to the good.

My MCV is 105, MCH is 33.4 and my MCHC is low at 31.8 I asked my doc to check my B-12 and it was 341, but my carbon dioxide level is staying up at 33.. Please what is going on with my blood work and should I seek the
advice of a Hematologist?

I am on Plavix since my stroke in Nov. of 2014....would this affect
me in anyway?? Although that level is very low at 79...so don't even know if it is helping
me to tell the truth.....HELP Please? Thank You!

High MCV
by: Kerri Knox, RN

Please see my pages on:

Macrocytic Anemia, which is how a high MCV is defined

and

Vitamin B12 Levels

Your B12 levels are LOW, not normal. Your doctor is just using a scale that is inappropriate. If you lived in Europe or Japan, you'd be diagnosed with Vitamin B12 Deficiency.

As I thought!!
by: Karen

Dear Kerri,
I had thought that my B12 count was low and I thank you for confirming that ....also that I probably have macro-sytic anemia..
So technically I am going through the opposite of what I went
through when I was younger...
At that time, I had micro-sytic anemia.....I had no iron, no B12,
and no folic acid and my Hematicrit was 27, and Hemaglobin
was 7 and dropping...They put me on 1000 mg of iron a day,
3 mg of folic acid a day and gave me B12 shots.....it took a week
for my counts to go up....
But at that time they did a 24 hr urine test not a simple blood test...
is that one of the reasons my doctor is not picking this up correctly?
She did not do the correct test for my B12 deficiency?
I am do to get new blood work done on the 4th of Aug. and see my Nephrologist...will let you know how that blood work turns out! Sincerely, Karen
