Mg and HBP?

by Terry
(Texas)

I have a relative that has had HBP for several years now. She takes Atenolol and Diovan HCT for this. Is also a heavy drinker and around 50-70 lbs overweight. She sweats alot, mostly when sleeping, not to mention big mood swings. Besides a big lifestyle change (that I'm sure she will not adhere to)

I recommended Mg. She unknowingly bought Mg Oxide(400mg) It also has Calcium(1000mg)and Zinc(15mg).

The bottle recommended dosage is 3 times a day. I told her to take at least twice a day. After reading a little more I am thinking 3 might be better, or even more due to the diuretic and drinking. Also is there any problem with her taking this bottle (100 tabs), then switching to a better Mg?

Any advice appreciated.

Nothing 'wrong' with oxide...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Terry,

There is nothing 'bad' or 'unhealthy' about mag oxide. It's just not absorbed as well.

But I wouldn't have her take that 3 times per day because that's 3000 mg per day of calcium! Yipes! Way way too much.

So, you could have her take that once a day and the other 2 or 3 times per day have her take any other kind of magnesium.

But that will do little for her if she's a heavy drinker. That will kill her before the high blood pressure. Really, giving her mag is putting a band aid on a gushing wound. But if she's interested, there are MANY who have had excellent success getting people off of drugs and alcohol using nutrition. The theory is that the alcoholism is a RESULT of nutritional deficiencies and neurotransmitter imbalances. Getting them nutritionally 'full' can help them to just not desire drinking any more! A little backwards, but it has worked in some cases.

I suggest that you take a look at the book The Food-Mood Solution: All-Natural Ways to Banish Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Stress, Overeating, and Alcohol and Drug Problems--and Feel Good Again and see if she's willing to give it a try.

I've seen many many alcoholics die from liver failure and it's not a pretty sight. I wouldn't wish that death on my worst enemy. If you want to best serve her, try to get her to stop drinking.

Mg and HBP?
by: DARIO

Hello terry;
I totally agree with Kerry; if she doesn't stop drinking there is very little you can do.

I'd like to add also that heavy drinking depletes a lot of Magnesium from the body "reserves".
On top of that she is taking diuretics which makes her lose more Magnesium among other important minerals so, taking 1200 mg of Mag Oxide(three pills) won't do any good because the body will absorb aprox 10% of that amount (120 mg) and a person in decent shape needs at least 300/350 mg a day.

Another very important point is that that excessive amount of calcium would make matters worse and HBP to rise, because without having enough amount of magnesium in the body to control it, calcium will deposit in the organs and arteries making them more "Rigid" therefore they will not expand when they need it and blood pressure will rise and it can even can cause strokes.

All this is a vicious cycle that can be stopped simply by eliminating alcohol and start a good diet.

Of course, starts with the person willing to do it.

Katie Knox, thanks so much for the reply!

Many things have transpired since my first query.

She started taking 200mg of 100% Chelated Mg twice a day. The transformation was incredible! Mood swings gone, night(and day) sweats gone, and BP returning to normal. Also stopped drinking almost. Still drinks once or twice a month.

Not sure if I mentioned, she is post menopausal??
Anyway, since starting the magnesium, she has started menstruating again. She is 53 yrs old. And has stopped the Mg due to this :~(. and all of the other symptoms have started to return. Since stopping the Mg the menstruating has stopped.
should mention, she has lost 10-15 lbs also.
any advice welcome
TIA
Terry
