Magnesium and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

by Leann
(Kansas)

I have been diagnosed with Iritable Bowel Syndrome (Constipation). I have tried everything, prescription & over the counter. So far, the best thing I have found is a natural laxative called Cascara Sagrada apparently I am not supposed to take it all the time. I ordered Chelated Magnesium and have started taking it.

Questions:
(1) How much and how often should I take it?
(2) How long will it take before it starts working?
(3) Is is safe to take forever?
(4) Does Maganesium interfere with any prescription medications?

I take carbamazepine, asthma med's, anti-depressants, synthroid, and acid reflux medication.

Any help and advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Leann

You HAVEN'T tried everything
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Leann,

Based on your questions, I believe that you've tried every type of pill or supplement (except magnesium) for your IBS, but I don't believe that you've 'tried everything'. In my consulting practice, I get people who tell me that SO much that I've considered writing a book called 'So, you think that you've tried everything?' because as soon as I ask, "Have you tried this?", "Have you tried this", I get 'No' 'No' 'No'.

And because of all of your issues, I DON'T think that you've tried everything- and the FIRST thing that I recommend for IBS is a Gluten Intolerance Diet and particularly a paleolithic diet such as the one outlined in the The Healthy Urban Kitchen.

I have MUCH MUCH more to say about a diet for IBS, but that's a start for you. As far as magnesium is concerned, you are asking questions that you would ask of someone giving a drug. Nutrients are not drugs and they should not be treated as such. If you 'just' want to take magnesium, then I would suggest that you can if you want to, but I can't help.

I help resolve the problems that cause the SYMPTOM of IBS and magnesium will only treat your constipation- but it's not a magic bullet and I warn you that expecting it to act all on it's own without making sure that you are caring for your whole body is asking for trouble, so I don't recommend it.

If you are interested in reversing your IBS and actually solving your problem, then I'm here to help, but if you 'just' want to take magnesium so you won't be constipated any more, then I won't help you because I think that it will cause even more problems in the long run if you decide to do it that way. It's NEVER a good idea to take one single nutrient in high dose in isolation and I have to warn you that if that is what you want to do, then I won't help you...

But if you want to solve the underlying problems that are causing the symptoms of IBS, then I'll be glad to answer any questions that you might have...

IBS how to take control of it
by: Marie

Besides being Gluten Free, Dairy Free, which I am doing and see a difference, how can you turn your life around regarding IBS. What other things can you recommend? I take no prescriptions for it as I find they never worked as promised and only covered up the problem.

It was diarhea prominent for years and now that I am getting older I find it is now leaning towards constipation, but I am wondering if my change in diet, gluten free has something to do with that. If you can give me some idea how to gain some control on this I would appreciate it as doctors just like to write scripts and not deal with the cause and the whole body as you do.

Dozens of things that you can do
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Marie,

Ugh... There are literally hundreds of things that you can do for IBS. Gluten free, dairy free is just a start. I have no health problems and I remain gluten free, soy free, corn free, processed food and sugar free 98% of the time simply because it's how we are supposed to eat- and the more that I eat like that, the more that I find 'modern' foods like pizza simply tasteless and disappointing because I've become so used to foods with actual nutrition.

So, if your gluten free diet includes gluten free junk food and/or sugar, coffee, processed foods of any kind and/or artificial anything, then get rid of it.

Are you still using so called Vegetable Oils, then get rid of them. They are extremely harmful and contribute to the risk of skin cancer.

I suggest that you eat LOTS of fermented foods and I have a half dozen jars of fermenting foods out on my counter at any one time. Right now, there are four different kinds of sauerkraut, olives, orange juice, kefir, onions, garlic and beet kvass all lactofermenting and I eat something lactofermented nearly every day.

You can find out more about the traditional diet that I follow and how to make lactofermented foods in the book Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats.

You can also do everything that you can to decrease inflammation, which is the main reason that people get sick and why autoimmune diseases even exist.

I could literally go on and on about how to reduce inflammation, get nourished, reduce toxins, get rid of parasites, etc. But I would need hours to do it...
