Low Vitamin D and Low Vitamin B12 Despite Eating Well

by Stephanie
(Fork, SC )

I'm a 48 year old post menopausal women. I Still mentally think I'm 30. Blood test showed that my B-12 is 220 and that my vitamin D is also low. The bones in my feet are killing me, my lower back and my hands are numb with muscle weakness. I've got osteopenia due to hysterectomy 12 yrs ago -so the doctor said.

He put me on 50,000 units of Vitamin D, Ultram,Tizanidine, sulindac and soma. I do not do drugs well, hate side effects. I eat well mostly veggie. Work outside and get plenty of sun. but it is getting harder just to get up and moving.

The pain is unbearable in the morning or after I sit for short periods of time. The normal things I use to do cause extreme pain. It is starting to effect me mentally. what am I doing wrong? Tried of being treated like it is all in my head and not my head!
Thanks

Stephanie

Vitamin D and Vitamin B12

Hi Stephanie,

So, you've given me one of your problems right there. You say that you 'eat well- mostly veggie', but you are low in B12. Well, a vegetarian diet is one of the Causes of Vitamin B12 Deficiency!! And vegetarian diets can vary WILDLY in nutrition. I know people who eat mostly white flour products and unfermented soy products (that block nutrient absorption) and proudly proclaim that they are vegetarian so they MUST be healthy.

(For an interesting story, I have a friend who is vegan on and off. She told me that the first time she went vegan she felt terrible and was in the worst health in her life. Many years later she realized it was due to eating large amounts of unfermented soy for her protein that had made her ill.)

Then you say that you get 'plenty of sun', but you can't be getting 'plenty' because you are low in vitamin d!! So, you may be getting OUT in the sun, but if you are covering up, wearing sunscreen and/or showering after sun exposure then you are not getting vitamin d from your sun exposure.

In any case, whatever you are doing, you're not getting enough vitamin d and B12- or you're not absorbing it.

So, if you are eating unfermented soy for your vegetarian protein- STOP!!!! It blocks nutrient absorption and was never meant for human consumption. If you are eating processed foods, sugar and/or white flour, white rice or any other 'vegetarian junk food' then STOP!!

OR you need to consider that your problems might be due to Symptoms of Gluten Intolerance. That's another common mistake that vegetarians make is that many tend to eat LOTS of gluten, and gluten is inflammatory and just generally hard on your system.

If you are gluten intolerant, then it's health destroying.

So, read the pages that I've sent you to and let me know what you think.....
