The Vitamin D and Menopause Connection
by: hot-flash

No it is not directly connected.

Low Vitamin D (D3) is common in the US in both men and women and it comes from low exposure to sunlight.

However our ability to turn sunlight into D3 decreases as we age so doctors recommend supplements.

I have to agree with hot flash. There is no link between Vitamin D and Menopause that I am aware of.

You just happen to be one of the 85% of the population to be Vitamin D Deficient.

Since the normal Vitamin D Levels are between 30 to 100 ng/ml, it doesn't SEEM as though you are THAT deficient- however, researchers believe that OPTIMUM Vitamin D Levels should be no lower than 40 ng/ml and NOT the 30 ng/ml that is shown on your laboratory results.

To get to these levels, it takes a lot more Vitamin D supplements than most people think. With the amounts that you told me you are taking, that equals approximately 2100 IU's per day.

While that sounds like a lot, you are proving a GREAT POINT for the people on this board- even 2000 IU's of Vitamin D Supplements per day may not be enough to keep you from being Vitamin D Deficient!

In fact, The third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey recommends that people take between 3800 to 5000 IU's of Vitamin D supplements per day!

So, while I don't think that Vitamin D and menopause are connected, as we get older we lose the ability to make Vitamin D from our skin as easily as when we were younger, so you may need to get your Check Your Vitamin D Level
Right in Your Own Home!
Vitamin D Levels checked more frequently to make sure that you are in the Optimal Vitamin D blood level range of between 40-80 ng/ml.

Lots of D
by: Stephanie

In order to get my levels where I wanted them per the Vitamin D Council, I needed to take 15,000 units a day with magnesium. I am at 75 and my doc is very happy but still believes in order to get to 75, I need to only take 2000 units a day. I just nod my head. I am taking less this summer due to sun exposure but will go back to taking 15,000 units a day probably by October 1. I have some hot flashes but not a lot post hysterectomy and menopause with this much vitamin D.

My Vit D level is 19. He said 50 is the lowest it should ever be. He prescribed 50,000 IU for 3 months & then another blood test. I only take that pill once a WEEK, not every day. I read a lot of things online & they say it does help with hot flashes and even hair loss. I started hot flashes at 43 1/2 yrs. old. No hysterectomy. In Feb. it will be 19yrs. of non stop hot flashes! At it's worse time it was a 5 minute hot flash every 15 minutes. I get nauseous, like I'm going to vomit, then get hot, then feel like I'm going to pass out. I lay down or have even sat down in stores. My hair started falling out in clumps 10 yrs. ago. Will see if the Vit D helps any of that. I also got Sjogren's Syndrome around menopause time when my periods stopped. Read that low D can cause that. Now I wonder if I had low levels way back then & it caused early menopause.
