There is no proper ratio by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!
I'm VERY confused about your vitamin and mineral regimen. First of all, if you absolutely HAVE to have coffee, I think that you are overestimating the negative effect that it will have on absorption of iron and calcium. If you are worried about it, just take all your vitamins at dinner! I'm not sure why that makes it 'so hard' for you. Then you trying to eat calcium free foods in between meals makes no sense. I have no idea why you are doing that or worrying about specifically eating low calcium foods and then taking calcium supplements.
Next, there is no 'proper ratio' and I don't think that you've read much on my site if you are taking the dosages of things that you are. It seems like the dosages that you are picking is completely random.
so, first of all Vitamin D. Please read my page on Vitamin D Therapy and follow the instructions. You are WAY WAY WAY off on your vitamin d dosage and unless you have a vitamin D level then you are just guessing. Your dose of 2000 IU's is less than HALF of a normal MAINTENANCE dose. If you've been living in Seattle and Michigan then you are likely EXTREMELY deficient and you might need up to 10 TIMES that dosage until your level comes up.
Your magnesium dosage is just 'random' too. Please see my page on Magnesium Dosage page and follow the instructions.
Next, you are worried far too much about the ratio of EPA to DHA while at the same time you aren't taking any significant amount of Omega 3 fatty acids. For a condition such as yours, I'd get 2000 to 3000 mg per day of fish oil. Don't worry about the ratio of DHA to EPA.
Next, what are you doing to eliminate your RA. This is all a bandaid if you don't start addressing the REASON WHY you have RA. And the FIRST thing to do is to learn about why ALL autoimmune diseases are caused in large part by Increased Intestinal Permeability which is turn is caused in large part by processed foods (including coffee which messes with your adrenal glands and stress hormones) and Gluten Sensitivity.
Yes that was very confusing, as I am lol. I'm wondering if I can take the vitamin d3 just once a day 2,000 (or more) and if that takes care of my absorption of 300mg calc at 5 x a dy or do they have to be taken at the same time to absorb properly? I guess I'm worried about absorption and too much of one alone causes probs or don't work alone.
The really confusing part about taking iron is, I heard you can't take iron & calc within a hr or 2 of each other or iron won't absorb, same as coffee. So it is very hard to take iron 2 x a dy in between calc 5x a dy. (keeping them separated from ea other and foods with calc.
I heard you can only absorb 500mg at a time w/calc? plus for some reason I get heartburn w/ calc citrate, So I take only 300mg at a time. I don't know why this seems so difficult looking for simple answer, going to read your site again. Thank-You
Why are you taking calcium 5 times per day? by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!
I have NO IDEA why you are taking calcium 5 times per day OR why you are taking 1500 Mg of calcium per day. Unless there is a very specific reason why you are needing to take 1500 mg of calcium per day, that is far too much. If you think that you need to take it 'for your bones' you are mistaken. Westerners get far more calcium (before supplementation) than both Japanese and Peruvian women who have extremely low rates of osteoporosis. And recent studies have shown that women who take calcium supplements for many years have higher rates of heart disease than those who don't.
If you are worried about you bones, then worry about getting enough MAGNESIUM and Vitamin D (of which you are NOT taking enough of either one of those and getting FAR too much calcium). It's the high levels of magnesium and vitamin d in Japanese and Peruvian women that protect their bones, not calcium. If you are interested in taking something 5 times a day, then take magnesium 5 times per day. I've never in my entire life heard of anyone taking calcium 5 times per day nor do I know of ANY reason why it would be in the least beneficial to do so!
And again, if you are interested in actually FIXING your RA, then focus on DIET and worry less about supplements. Eliminating gluten, pasteurized dairy, 'battery raised' animal products and most grains is going to help you FAR more than worrying so intensely about this strange vitamin regimen that you have set yourself up on...
i've been reading through your site, i find it very informative. I just went to my doctors for blood work, i've been having joint pain and cricks all in my knees and ankles and sometimes cramping in my calves, like cramp/tight/ache..it all developed in a matter of about 5 weeks. my vit D came back at 22ng/ml..all tests for autoimmune came back neg as well as lyme test. My feritin was still elevated as it was 4 yrs ago when i had blood work(473) and im NOT post menapausal. I'm not sure what my magnesium level is, i do not see that on my results, i will have 2 get him 2 check that when i go back in 6 weeks. I'm wondering if my feritin could be high because of my vit D deficiency since vit D reduces inflammation (or so i've read) and feritin can reflect an inflammatory process in the body...any ideas on this? The doc sent a note along with the test results recommending 1000mgs vit D/day(and a referral for a hemotologists)...i'm sure she meant iu's and after reading ur site I will be uping that 2 at least 5000iu's.
