Are you SURE?
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Matt,

Couple of things. First, make sure that the units are in ng/ml and not nm/L. If they are in nm/L, that is a normal level. The units make a difference.

Next, are you a lifeguard or otherwise out in the sun constantly? If so, it's completely normal. A study done on lifeguards in Hawaii showed their levels can reach that high and they have no problems from it.

If you aren't, then do you actually have the lab sheet in front of you? If so, please read the lab test again to make sure that it is a 25 OH D or a Hydroxy Vitamin D and NOT a

1,25 OH D

OR a

Didhydroxy Vitamin D

Those are NOT vitamin d levels from supplementation and mean something entirely different.

If it IS a 25 OH D, then I'd just ask for a repeat test. Labs make mistakes and procedural errors sometimes, so just get another one and make sure.

If you're still high after that, then it could be the lab itself and insist on using a different lab because their machine could be calibrated improperly as well.

So, try that out get the high levels confirmed from two different labs because that definitely can make a difference.

You can read a bit more about different labs and why it makes a difference at The Vitamin D Council. Scroll down to the heading where is says,

"Does it matter what reference lab my doctor uses?"

and take a look there.

I really wouldn't worry about it at this point (and in any case, those levels are not toxic, they are just high) because it's unlikely that it's correct.

If it DOES turn out to be correct, then check any protein drinks, vitamin d milk or prepared foods that you are eating that may have vitamin d in them. It's possible that it's been improperly prepared with too high of a dose of vitamin d- that actually happened to a popular alternative doctor who was drinking a prepared protein drink every day and became vitamin d toxic. That would be the only other explanation that I would have for it and improperly dosed vitamin d supplemented foods are actually the number one cause of vitamin d overdose!

But get your levels checked by 2 different labs first. I'll assume it's a mistake until proven otherwise that your level is correct.

By the way, just to ease your mind, even if it is 150 ng/ml

High Vitam D Levels
by: Matt

The units are ng/ml and it was the 25OH D test.

No, I'm not a lifeguard and do not spend an excessive amount of time outdoors.

They have taken the test several times now over the past year so I'm assuming they have double and triple checked the results. My doctor just had me come in yesterday to take more blood for different tests as there is an endocrinologist in the area that has taken an interest.

I don't take any supplements and the only milk product I drink is some skim milk with my cereal in the morning. I can't believe that would make much of a difference.

Your message cut off at the end when you started saying "To ease your mind...". What were you saying?

Thanks for responding.

Matt

Weird...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Matt,

That's weird. Well, I can't say that I've ever heard of that before. No, the milk wouldn't have anything to do with anything unless their processing added tons of extra Vitamin D in an industrial problem.

To ease your mind, 150 ng/ml isn't toxic it's just high and shouldn't cause any long term problems as long as your calcium level isn't high.

I'd still try to get a level done from a different laboratory and/or try to find out if they have calibrated it and if they've had any other problems with high levels.

I've just never once heard of high levels without sun or supplements. So, other than getting a level from another company, I don't have anything to tell you, unfortunately.

But I'd love it if you keep me informed as to what, if anything, your docs find out...

High Vitamin D Levels

Mat,

Did you ever find out why your Vitamin D levels are so high? I also have high vitamin D levels and have been informed to not really worry about it. Thanks.

high Vitamin D
by: LBS

I too have both high vitamin D and Calcium. My Dr has also never seen such a thing. I do not drink an excess of milk, nor do I take a supplement. I do eat the occasional protein meal bars. I do not work out of doors or sleep in a tanning bed. I live in Michigan. We get little to no sun. I have an under active thyroid that is treated with synthroid. I have tested positively for hyperparathyroid on my last blood work. This was retested and now is normal. I eat fairly well. Maintain a decent weight. Exercise regularly. Do not smoke. Any thoughts on This?

me too

I am an athlete and about 2 months ago I started experiencing extreme joint and muscle pain. Still during my rest time I experience fatigue and pain. I recently had tests done and it was only my high level of 102 vitamin D that stood out . I too do not take supplements but do eat alot of nuts and drink quite a bit of almond milk. My calcium level is 9.8 ( considered normal). Is there a way to reverse vitamin toxicity? My doc is confused that with a level that high would not effect calcium levels. I just wanna feel normal again

The reason that your calcium level is not high
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Miriam,

The reason that your calcium level is not high is because you are NOT TOXIC! The DEFINITION of vitamin d toxicity is when levels are so high that they cause increased calcium levels. Levels far higher than yours are found NATURALLY in lifeguards in Hawaii in the summer, so PLEASE get it out of your head that you are toxic. Your level is barely out of the normal range and is not even close to being toxic.

Just because you are having muscle and joint pain does not mean it has ANYTHING to do with that vitamin d level and I'm not sure how or why you decided that this was the case.

As far as you not taking supplements, are you getting sun? If so, then this is why your vitamin d levels are at the high end of normal. I'm not sure why you would tell me about you eating a lot of nuts and almond milk in this conversation, since nuts have no vitamin d, and if you look at your almond milk, it may be fortified, but it will not contain any significant amount of vitamin d. So, what is the significance of your eating nuts and almond milk? I'm not sure what you are trying to say.

Again, I will repeat. Your vitamin d level is BARELY out of the normal range and, by definition, you are NOT TOXIC. Please look for an other reason why you have joint pain and muscle pain. Maybe it's overtraining, maybe it's gluten sensitivity. Maybe it's a poor diet that includes a bunch of processed foods like almond milk.
