Vitamin D for the Family
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Kim,

Well it sounds like you have been doing your reading. But most researchers believe that 30 ng/ml is a bit low. Most say NEVER let it get lower than 32 ng/ml, while The Vitamin D Council recommends to keep it between 50 to 80 ng/ml.

So, if you are really interested in following those guidelines, then there is no way to do it without getting levels. In fact, if you look at the chart on my Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment page, the Vitamin D Council says to take "Enough to get the Vitamin D Level
Between 50-80 ng/ml".

Kids can use Vitamin D3 Gummies for Kids if they aren't able to yet swallow pills.

They say this on purpose because everyone's vitamin D requirements are SO different that they refuse to give an Average or recommended dosage for anyone.

So, that is the ideal.

In reality, getting levels for the 5 of you is difficult and it would be easier to have an average dose if you are unable to get levels for all of you.

So, Dr. Mercola recommends an average maintenance dose of about 30 IU's per pound per day. Which works out well when you are trying to dose a whole family. This works out to:

1500 IU's per day for a 50 pound kid

4500 IU's per day for a 150 pound small adult or large kid, etc.

To do this, you can simply calculate all of their needs for a week and dose them all at once. Much easier than trying to remember your vitamin D on schooldays. And taking it once a week is PERFECTLY FINE. It is safe and effective!
