Dont know who to believe about Vitamin D

by Michelle
(Ohio)

I have always had aches and pains, however the last year the aches and pains have increased, I have swelling on my right knee, fatigue, hair falling out, memory problems, etc.. etc..

My chiropractor suggested I have my D as well as ESR checked. I had my Dr. order the tests, in the mean time my Chiropractor started me on D3-- 50k the first day and 10k there after.

The results came back:

Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy 18
Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy, D3 18
Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy, D2 <4

ESR level 25

My Dr. recommended I take an over the counter vitamin D supplement, total daily dose should be 800 IU per day. She also said that even though my ESR is elevated it is nothing to worry about.

I emailed her back and asked if she was referring to D or D3, she said that the measurement of D3 is normal, the total Vit D 25-hydroxy is low. treatment is based on total D level.. what the heck does that mean??

I am sorry for the long message, but how can the Chiro and the Dr. be so apart on their recommendations?

I am 39 F, 150lbs 5'4". I know that I am overweight and I am really trying to lose, but it is just not coming off.. over the past 2 years I have gained about 35 lbs. ugggghhhh.....

It's complicated..

Hi Michelle,

It's really understandable the position that you are in. Very confusing for you. Remember, I have been a nurse in hospitals for over 15 years and never ONCE did a patient EVER have a Vitamin D Level drawn that I was caring for. No matter what they were in the hospital for.

I began research for this website and ran across all of the information that I have on Vitamin D by complete accident that I began finding out about the THOUSANDS of research studies that are out there about vitamin d and what I put on my website is 100% from research studies. These are NOT my opinions!!

In many circumstances, there is a 'standard of care' that doctors follow. If they follow it, then they CANNOT BE SUED. Once they step outside the standard of care, even if they FAIL to do something that is research based and is 'obvious' to everyone, they can't be sued for NOT doing something that was NOT in the standard of care.

And the ONLY 'standard of care' for vitamin d is to treat it ONLY when calcium levels are low. Until the AMA sets a 'standard' to treat your Vitamin D levels (which they have not) then your doctor ONLY has to follow what the AMA and the government have already set up- and that is the RDA.

So, if you were to die tomorrow in a car accident that was completely unrelated to your doctor telling you to take 50,000 IU's of vitamin d, they could potentially be taken to court for not following the standard of care and maybe you became impaired from the high dosage that you were given and that's why you got in the car accident.

Bizarre, but potentially a reality.

A chiropractor, however, is under less constraint to recommend 'natural' treatments- and chiropractors are more inclined to actually research the latest natural treatments on their own.

Your doctor puts him/herself at RISK for recommending a safe and natural treatment- that they are less likely to believe in (because it's a 'natural' treatment) and that they would have to research on their own to find out about because their are no Billion dollar companies out there promoting their latest and greatest vitamin d research.

So, first of all, your Vitamin D Level is 18 ng/ml. I'm not sure if your doctor is 'adding up' the D2 and D3 levels to get a 'normal' level, but your D3 level is 18 ng/ml and your Total is 18 ng/ml. That is low by ANYONE's calculations. They do not get 'added up' to make 36- which MAYBE your doctor is doing- I don't know.

So, I will refer you to what the RESEARCHERS have to say about what your level should be on the Vitamin D Level page and the Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment page.

When you take a look at the tables that I've made, these are what the people who know the most about Vitamin D in the WORLD

have to say about Vitamin D. They are on the 'cutting edge'- your doctor gets what is 'filtered down' to them.

So, historically it takes doctors decades to CENTURIES to get on the cutting edge of research. The dangers of smoking were outlined in the late 1800's, but it took until the 1960's or 1970's for the AMA to take an 'official' stance that smoking was bad for you.

Ignaz Semmelweiz was the first doctor to promote handwashing to reduce infection. He was discredited, forced out of medicine and died in an insane asylum because he was tortured by the idea of all the people who were dying of infection unnecessarily.

If you think that is 'ancient history', one of the foremost vitamin d researchers, Dr. Michael Holick, was dismissed from the Department of Dermatology of Boston University for recommending that people get 15 minutes of direct skin sunlight exposure without sunscreen 3 times per week in order to get Vitamin D. Yet the doctors who dismissed him still won't recommend Vitamin D Supplements either! So, if doctors have their way, you are to get NO sunlight exposure and NO vitamin d supplements- when the research CLEARLY states that we get vitamin d deficient without vitamin D!

We are still in the Middle Ages as far as doctors recommending the latest research is concerned. So, when it comes to anything 'natural', most doctors won't even recommend exercise because double-blind placebo controlled trials have not shown that it works to prevent anything!

So, if you want to prevent or treat any health issues using natural means, you MUST do your own research as you CAN'T rely on doctors to recommend anything except drugs and surgery to help you with your problems.

Your ESR

Your ESR is NOT normal and it IS something to worry about. Your doctor must be smoking something to be saying that. There is SO much evidence that inflammation contributes to heart disease and other chronic illnesses. You HAVE to do more research on that. And I have JUST the resource. There is a former cardiac surgeon turned natural health guy who claims that inflammation is the cause of all heart disease and that cholesterol problems are simply a lie.

While you didn't say anything about your cholesterol, you really should read The Great Cholesterol Lie because he talks about why you need to get rid of your inflammation and how to do it!! Don't let the 'cholesterol' part turn you away.

You NEED to get rid of that inflammation- its a BIG deal!!

Kerry,
My husband who has been following your protocol for Cipro poisoning, after having taken 120,000 mg. over a 4-5 yr. period, and ended up with horrible tendonitis in his shoulders and a torn rotator cuff...is finally getting much better... I have some questions though.....

Hi Karen,

In my book, I provide 2 different places where you can ask questions about the Levaquin Tendonitis Solution Protocol. I do that so as not to tell the world how to do the protocol. The links to the two forums to ask questions should be both at the front and the back of the book.

If you ask on one of those, I'll be able to help you out.
