Liver and Kidney Harm from Vitamin D

Hi Priya,

There has no noted liver and kidney harm from high dose vitamin d. If you take a look at my Vitamin D Toxicity page, you'll see that in East Germany for over a decade, they ROUTINELY gave infants a total of over 3 million IU's of vitamin d by the time they reached 18 months old.

In the study cited, there were ZERO cases of liver or kidney problems. And there was also a case of a woman with parathyroid problems who was given 100,000 IU's per DAY for YEARS- including throughout her (healthy) pregnancy. She had NO problems and neither did her baby.

I would NOT be recommending on my website that people take 5000 IU's a day to meet their Vitamin D Requirements and be recommending up to double that for Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment if it was causing liver and kidney harm.

The people that are saying this are simply repeating rumors and have no knowledge of vitamin D. It MAY cause these problems in the case of an Overdose on Vitamin D, but an overdose on water will cause brain swelling and death. This does not prevent us from drinking water in therapeutic amounts or make us afraid to drink water everyday.

And yes, your symptoms sound like you are NOT experiencing liver or kidney damage.

I must thank you for your very prompt and wonderful reply which has set to rest all my doubts about Vitamin D and the liver and kidneys. No author ever explained the significance of these in his article as clearly and as decisively as you have done. It has released me of a tremendous worry -- as otherwise I would have to rush to places to get the liver and kidney function tests done again and again each time that I took high dose Vit D!

Thank you Kerri, you are such a boon to humanity and your site is the best on Vitamin D ever written by anyone.
