My 71 year old father was diagnosed with Dementia 5 years ago and reading more about Gluten intolerance and how it affects our bodies I wondered if his dementia could be partially attributed to Gluten Intolerance?

I worry about myself and my children.

Gluten Intolerance and Demetia..
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Jim,

Well, there are so many reasons for dementia.Gluten intolerance can be one of them and that may be true for your father, but it's really hard to say. It could also have simply been Mental Changes from B12 Deficiency from poor diet or from other absorption issues not related to gluten intolerance.

But if you seem to have a lot of unexplained illnesses, autoimmune diseases and other problems in your family, then it's likely that there is some level of gluten intolerance there. If everyone else in your family has lived to be an energetic 100 year old- then it's probably not gluten intolerance.

But if you are concerned about the rest of your family, the best things that you can do is to eat really really well. I recommend that you follow the guidelines from The Healthy Urban Kitchen which just HAPPENS to be gluten free, but is really more about just eating real whole foods that our ancestors would likely have eaten.

I also recommend that everyone in your family get their vitamin d levels done and take enough vitamin d to get your levels at the 'optimum' range as outlined on the Vitamin D Levels page. And everyone should take a High Quality Multivitamin and Mineral Supplement as 'health insurance'.

Our food is simply not as nutritious as it used to be 50 or 100 years ago, and while researchers deny that the epidemic of chronic illnesses is in any way, shape or form related to poor nutrition, I have to disagree with them.

So, along with getting exercise, fresh air and sunshine- those are the things that you can do to live a long and healthy life.
