Muscle Aches and Bone Pain
by: Kerri Knox, RN-The Immune Queen!

Hi Jazzy,

It is VERY sad to me that you have suffered so long and NOT ONE DOCTOR has even thought to do a Vitamin D Level on you to see if that is your problem.

Yes, it COULD be that Vit D Deficiency is your problem... but, you'll never know unless you get tested!!

While it sure seems like a great idea to take some Vitamin D for your problem to see if it helps, the problem lies in not knowing what your Vitamin D Level is.

The research on Vitamin D Deficiency and Pain shows that even a MILD Vitamin D Deficiency can cause pain. So, unless you actually correct your deficiency, you will not know if your pain is due to the deficiency!!!

And 5000 IU's is actually somewhat of a maintenance dose. While it may SEEM very high because the RDA is 600 IU's- it may not be nearly enough to correct your deficiency. So the risk here is that you take the Vitamin D for a month or two, find that it doesn't work and conclude that the Vitamin D Deficiency was NOT causing your pain.

But the only reason it didn't work was because you didn't actually correct your deficiency!!!

So, you can see the problem here...

The first thing that you MUST do is to Check Your Vitamin D Level and get treated appropriately.

Bone and Muscle Aches
by: AprilRain

I also have been suffering for a little over a year while breastfeeding my baby. At the start of the year the pain was just in the lower back & teeth feeling sensitive then eventually over the year the aches started to be in other places like the knees & wrist.

I also saw my primary doctor during this time complaining of bone pain & fatigue he sent me to a orthopedics doctor who took a back xray & said I was fine.

Then my primary doctor tried to suggest an antidepressant. I was really upset that the doctor acted like I was imagining this pain.

Finally after giving up on my primary doctor I seen a endocrinologist who said I had a vitamin D deficiency.

It can take months until you feel 100% better especially considering how long you were deficient & how long it takes to bring your level up to the optimal level.

thanks

Thank you so much for quick response.

I am in the process now of arranging to get my vit D levels checked and will be happy to share the results once i get them back!

Vit D
by: Anonymous

I also have had muscle pain and other symptoms. After much frustration and getting no where my physician and specialists in my area.

I even had a doctor actually suggest that maybe I was 'depressed'.

I finally went to the Mayo clinic where I found out that my vit D was low (among other things) and was given a prescription for Vit D.

I can't believe I had to travel to another state and to the 'renowned' Mayo Clinic to get answers!

I had been in great health all of my life until this experience and I have learned a lot about how to handle future medical problems for myself and my family.

Always get a second opinion - and know that doctors can be wrong just as any other professional can!

It is so good to hear from people with similiar issues and learn that i am not alone in this. I thought i was losing my mind at first!

I got my doctor to write me a script to get my vit D levels checked and i will do that first thing on Monday.

Thanks for great feedback!

Keep us up to date Jazzy. We'll be waiting to hear what happens with your results and PLEASE come back and let us know what dosage of vitamin d that your doctor puts you on for your (presumed) deficiency so that you can get a 'second opinion' about his vitamin D deficiency treatment.

constant aches and muscles pain!!!
by: jazzy

My doctor just called about five minutes ago with the best news ever (I finally have a clue what is wrong with me).....

I am vitamin D deficient.

My levels are 20 ng/ml! while the normal should be at least 50 ng/ml. He ordered 50,000IU of vit D for 4 weeks then I have to redo my blood test then see him.

I am so happy to finally have an true answer to my aches and pain. Again, thanks to everyone for sharing their information with me on this blog!

Yeah,

More About Vitamin D

I'm so glad that we could help you find out what your problem might be Jazzy. Who says that the internet doesn't have good information???!!!

I'm SO glad that you might have an answer to your problems now.

I hate to tell you that the dose your doctor put you on is the right dose, but for too short of a time. You'll need to be on 50,000 IU's per week for probably 2 to 3 months at least.

But you are going to get your vitamin D level checked again anyway, so you're doctor will see that it is not enough and will (hopefully) put you on more.

Please come back in a few weeks and let us know if you are starting to feel better.

update
by: Jazzy

Hi Kerri,

It has been a while since i last update you about my vitamin D deficiency. I just got my levels rechecked after initially finding out that my levels were 20 and was pleased to find out that they are now 60! I am so very excited. I must admit however that although nothing else hurts my elbows since ache from time to time. I wondered if it was because the arms used to do just about everything?

That being said, my doctor has told me that i can now stop taking my vit D tablets. I don't think he knows what he is talking about so i still continue to take them. I do however now do the maintenance dose of Vitamin D Supplements 5000 IU's a day!

Any feedback would be great! Thanks!

Jazzy

Yeah!!
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Wow! It's SO sad that you had to suffer for so long over a simple vitamin d deficiency that research shows can cause your symptoms, that is super cheap and easy to find and treat and is ENDEMIC with over 85% of the population with vitamin D deficiency!

Yes, Jazzy, don't listen to your doctor in this case. They didn't find it in the first place, what makes you think that they know how to keep you from getting it again? He is totally and completely idiotic to tell you that you don't need to take any more vitamin D.

How does he think that you became deficient in the first place? Vitamin D Supplements 5000 IU's per day is PERFECT. Just get your level checked again at the end of winter in about 6 months, then you can just get it checked annually if it is OK when you check in March.

Also, if it works out for you, you can take your weekly dose all at once so you don't have to take a pill every day.

Yeah! I'm so happy for you Jazzy! Get the word out so that others don't have to suffer like you! Tell everyone that you know. Think of how many people may not be as lucky as you!

Bone Pain
by: Anonymous

I have had the bone pain and being tired all the time for about two years now. I was sent to a neurologist, all test were done were fine. I suggested a vitamin d blood test be done, after reading some things on the internet.

My test came back to be 11. My regular doctor seem to think it was fibro.

She told me to take 2,000 units a day and come back in two weeks. I know this is not a enough. Please advise what to do now, tired of being in pain.

More Vitamin D ..
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi F,

You mean advice other than to get a new doctor you mean?!

Seriously, though. It is absolutely safe to take 10,000 IU's of Vitamin D3 per day, that's 2 capsules of Longevity Plus 5000 IU Vitamin D Capsules until your doctor checks you again in 2 to 3 months (2 weeks is NOT enough time for vitamin D to kick in, but if you want to let them take your blood again so that they can see that, it's not a bad idea).

But that will bring your levels up over a period of a couple of months and there has NEVER been an Overdose on Vitamin D at 10,000 IU's per day.

It's too bad, though, that your doctors are not more assertive and didn't recognize this earlier. I hope that you get better soon, let me know if there is anything that I can help you with.

severe pain in legs hips knee and crumps
by: dandouna

I started my therapy a week ago but with no improvement.what shall i do my pain is worse please helppppppppppppppppppp....also i have crumps in my legs...

Please see Vitamin D Therapy Page
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Please see my page on Vitamin D Therapy page and the page on Muscle Cramps and see why taking 'just' vitamin d could actually be making you feel worse.

I never recommend taking 'just' vitamin d, and if you are having severe health problems anyway, which it sounds like you are, you should be on a HIGH quality multivitamin and mineral supplement like Jigsaw Health's Essential Daily Packs or Beyond Any Multiple that both have a high dose of high quality magnesium.

Please read through those pages and feel free to ask any questions after you've read through them. But there are over a thousand pages on this site that will help to answer your questions...

Vit D level
by: Alice

My problem seems to be just the opposite from these. I have been on the Mega dose Four different times in two years. I get up to 30, then the Dr puts me on over the counter, 800mg. This last bout of the mega dose, after four months on it, my knees starting hurting so bad I could hardly climb stairs.

My lower back had been hurting for as long as I had been on the vit D. Which was two years. so I quit taking the mega dose, and within a week my pain had gone away. My back was so bad I could hardly walk. Now I am doing good. I am going for blood work this week, then for another check-up next week.

I don't know how My
Dr. will handle this problem.

Inadequate Treatment
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Alice,

The reason that you are still hurting after two years is that your doctor has been treating you with an inadequate dose of vitamin d for two years. A level of 30 is TOO LOW and a dose of 800 IU's per day is NOT going to maintain your level even at 30 ng/ml. 800 IU's will cause your levels to drop back into the 20's again.

An OPTIMAL level of vitamin d is 40 to 80 ng/ml or even 50 to 80 ng/ml depending upon who you talk to. I wouldn't EXPECT your pain to go away because you never get to a level where your bones are at maximum absorption of calcium.

To put it another way, lets say that you were dehydrated and your doctor gave you 2 glasses of water, then told you to drink one glass of water every day. You would keep getting dehydrated over and over because that is not enough water to stop you from becoming dehydrated! The way that your doctor is treating your vitamin d deficiency is almost identical and it's causing you severe problems, likely in the short term with continued pain and in the long term with increased risk for diabetes, cancer, etc. This is NOT OK. Your doctor is being negligent and treating your vitamin d deficiency inappropriately. It's time for YOU to take this issue into your own hands and read my page on Vitamin D Therapy and follow the instructions so that you can finally feel better. You do not have to continue this suffering that your doctor is causing...

tremendous pain in hips, legs and buttock muscles
by: Anonymous

I was recently diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency. My doctor prescribed 50,000 units once a week for 6 weeks and then 1 pill once a month thereafter. I have only taken 2 pills so far, and I am in tremendous pain in my hips, legs and buttock muscle area. It hurts to walk, sit, stand, etc. Sometimes I feel like I am going to fall because the pain just grabs me out of nowhere. Could this dose be too high? I am trying to go out in the sun as much as possible. I am fair. It feels like the sun is burning my skin. Does it take a long time for the supplements to take effect? Will the pain go away? I am only in my thirties. I am worried about falling. I cannot stoop, bend, turn, etc. without pain.

[Kerri's note: Please read the thread. This was already addresses on this and other threads on this same topic on this site. There are at least 10 or so threads, including this one, where I've answered this question.]

please help!
by: charlotte

Hi, ive been ill for 6 months now with pain just about everywhere especially in my back arms and legs :( I am struggling to play with my 18 month old and really hurts to pick him up!.. I went back and forth to the docs at first palmed me off with post virus and then a few weeks later it was stress and anxiety so they put me on pills for that!.. I did some research and came across vit d defiency so I asked for the blood test she was very reluctant, i got a call from the docs receptionist telling me my vit d levels are low and to take multivitamins once a day!.. from what ive read that's only 200 units of vit d nowhere near enough to catch up to normal levels. I have an app with my doc tomorrow to discuss this but I dont think she has a clue. What treatment would u recommend and would i need to take magnesium too? Thanks in advance. Charlie

Gone over this literally a thousand times
by: Kerri Knox, Registered Nurse

Glad that you are questioning your doctor on the dosage. You're right, they don't have a clue. However, I've discussed the treatment and dosage quite literally a thousand times on this site. Please see my page on Vitamin D Therapy and follow the step by step instructions. I also include this information in my Vitamin D Facts sheet that you get when you sign up for my newsletter. This sign up is to the right of every page on this site. And in fact, this question was answered ON THIS THREAD as well- just above where you asked your question. You would have had to scroll past the answer to your question to ask your question!

You're welcome to ask further questions, just please look around on the site first. I've been answering questions for several years and rarely get a question that I don't simply refer to an answer that I've already given.

thanks
by: charlotte

Hi kerri,

thanks for your reply.. well i found out my level from the doc and it was at 17 ng/ml. which she told me I wasn't deficent i was insufficient and told me to carry on taking multi-vitamins and offered me no check up blood test!.. I've now had a look through your site and have brought my own vitamins and am taking 10,000iu daily of vitamin d3 and aslo 200mg of magnesium. Hope this is correct. Will do this for 2/3 months and see if I can get a follow up blood test from a different doc!.. also can the pains become more constant when correcting the defiency? Does that mean the vits are working?

Thanks for all the information on your site it has helped alot. Charlie.

Just pain..
by: Kerri Knox, Registered Nurse

I have no idea if pains would get 'more consistent' if the vitamin d is working or if that is significant. Everyone is different and will experience this differently. Regardless of how you perceive it, it will just take whatever amount of time it takes to resolve, and unfortunately the best that you can do is to just try to do your best to stay as comfortable as possible.

Please read my page on Magnesium Dosage since 200 mg is barely even a child's dose, it's probably not helping you very much and you may benefit by increasing your magnesium dosage. In addition, using Magnesium Bath Flakes in the evening before you go to bed can help to improve pain levels, as well as helping you to relax for sleep.

Bone pain
by: Anonymous

Hi
I have bone pains near my toes and hips due to vitamin d deficiency. Doctor suggested 2000 I.u. of vitamin d. But after reading on the Internet I started taking over the counter magnesium supplement of 400mg even though the doctor didn't prescribe it. I feel better when I take magnesium but I am scared if I am overdosing it. Thanks for any help!

Swollen wrists
by: Helen

I have an 11 month old baby and about 4 weeks ago my wrists became stiff and slighty swollen, then I noticed my ankle was tender too, I had bloods taken and my doctor told me I'm low in Vit D but didn't say how much.

She told me to go to my phamacy and they would inform me how much was needed daily. The pharmacist told me to take 800 ius daily but I am taking double for the last 2 weeks but since reading this thread, it seems my dose is far too low? I can't believe how vague the info for correct dosage from my doctor and pharmacist has been!

I have been very worried about the swelling and concerned it was RA but bloods came back normal for R factor. Can low Vit D cause swelling as well as pain?

Vitamin D levels High but Pain recurrs
by: Anonymous

I was diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency in July. I was prescribed 8000 units a day for 6 weeks, then 2000 a day for maintenance. I had the test done because I started having pain all over. After taking my first dose I felt much better.

After two weeks the pain was gone. However, the pain has been recurring every month for the last six months. It lasts for about a week to a week and half each time. My levels are now well above normal and I'm taking 5000 units a day. My calcium fell during this time and I was asked to take 1200 units of calcium starting about 3 months ago. This seemed to do the trick and for two months I had no pain.

However, I've recently become pregnant and the pain has returned. I'm not sure why as both calcium, vitamin d and all other mineral levels are normal (vitamin d still well above normal). Is my body still just healing or is it something else?
