Dosage for kids...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Cassie,

So, as far as the kids dosages are concerned, here is the 'rule of thumb' that I use from Dr. Cannell of the Vitamin d Council. He says,

"Children over the age of 1 year should take 1,000 IU per every 25 pounds of body weight per day, depending on latitude of residence, skin pigmentation, and sun exposure. On the days they are outside in the summer sun, they do not need to take any; in the winter they will need to supplement accordingly."

So, that covers the 2 kids and they can take Vitamin D3 Gummies for Kids if they are not able to take pills.

But for your breast fed one, that's harder. I've actually covered the breast feeding and vitamin d issued at the link below,

So, after reading through that post extensively, you'll need to make one of two choices.

1) Stay at your current vitamin d dosage and supplement your baby with the 1000 IU's per day that Dr. Cannell recommends for babies under one year old.

OR

2) Increase YOUR vitamin d intake to the around 6400 IU's that it took to get breast milk levels up high enough to make a difference for the baby.

Either way, really the dose that you are taking for yourself is really not enough even just for YOU, let alone to be breastfeeding too. If you go to the Vitamin D Requirements page, you'll see that the 'average' person needs between 3800 to 5000 IU's per day, and that's NOT including pregnancy or lactation!!

So, you may want to consider upping your dosage, whichever way you decide to go.
