Breastfeeding and Vitamin D
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Stacy,

You're concerns are valid- you certainly CAN Overdose on Vitamin D. In fact, you can overdose on ANY natural or artificial substance- even water!!

But vitamin d is actually one of the safest natural substances that there is and there has NEVER been an overdose on 10,000 IU's a day or less- and the difference between 10,000 IU's and 10,800 IU's a day is really really small.

And remember that it is not DOSE that determines an overdose, it is your Vitamin D Level. So, since your level is 31, you have a long long way to go before you are even CLOSE. Just get a level in 3 months and that dose and determine your needs from there. You will not overdose in that time period.

And as far as your daughter is concerned, vitamin d is not processed by the kidneys, and even kidney dialysis is not a Vitamin D Contraindication, so it's safe for kidney patients.

And also, be sure to read the Vitamin D and Breastfeeding page and look at the chart on the bottom. She will not even be getting a full dose of vitamin d in your breastmilk for about 3 - 4 months after you start taking supplements AND there has NEVER been a baby overdose on vitamin d from it's mother.

There was even a case of a woman who had parathyroid disease who was given 100,000 IU's a day purposely by her doctor to control her parathyroid. She went through a completely healthy pregnancy and breast fed a healthy child on that GIGANTIC dose without any problems!!

So, you can stop worrying and start taking your Vitamin D Supplements and get you and your baby some vitamin d.

Remember, your baby's long term health depends, in part, on her vitamin d levels in childhood. Everyone worries that their kids are going to get too much, when they should be worrying about them not getting ENOUGH!!
