Antibiotics followed by C.Diff

Hi Kerri,

I got a positive stool test for h.pylori and was given 7 days of Amoxicillin and Metronidazole with Lanzaparazole. I had diarrhea the whole time and it didn't stop even after the drugs were done.

I tried to follow this with the Cedars-Sinai SIBO herbal protocol of Allimed/Berberine/Oregano Oil 3 times a day but had to stop after 4 days as felt so sick. I started passing bloody mucous and having a lot of pain. So after a second stool test I've now been told I have C.Diff and have been given 10 days supply of Metronidazole 400mg twice a day.

My question is, is it safe for me to take probiotics during this next 10 days? And then add the mastic gum and DGL for the next 2 months or is any of this contra-indicated? What do you think of the SIBO herbal protocol? I can't decide if it was too strong for my system or not strong enough/long enough?

Many many thanks for your great book and help. I live in the UK and I just don't think the docs here are well up on the gut biome and/or SIBO.

Hi again Kerri, and thanks so much for replying. Well I finished the 10 days of Metronidazole and 2 days later had to come home from work with watery diarrhea, pain and fever- only for 24 hours though. Doctor's advice: try yakult!! They are sending me for colonoscopy to check if I have an ulcer as still getting heartburn, although less intense. I'm scared to get ill again. Fed with doctors now, want to try to build up my immune system and gut biome by myself. Doc won't test for vitamin deficiencies, says it's fine to keep taking Omeprazole indefinitely, says it's not interfering with nutrient absorption. I don't believe her. I'd like to order the complete defense vitamins plus extra vit D but you don't ship to the UK. Can you recommend a reputable stockist here? Thank goodness for people like you! I would be so lost and scared without this! Many many thanks Mandi Bosworth

So, first of all, I would deal with a single bug at a time. Actually eliminate the C-diff first and get tested to ensure it's gone before you start the next one.

Yes, you can take probiotics. In fact, I'd add a mixed probiotic AND a stand alone Saccharomyces Boulardii, which has been shown to help get rid of C diff.

I think the SIBO cocktail was good. Perhaps it was just the C diff giving you the pain and bloody mucous. You can try again, but wait until after you eliminate the C-diff and the H pylori before you do. Also, start slowly on the cocktail. If you were sick, it might have been killing off the bad bugs too quickly and you need to slow down.

You don't want to do too much at once as it can make you sick and you can also get supplement fatigue taking too much at once and just getting tired of taking so much stuff.
