18 Year Old With Low Vitamin D

by jeanne
(michigan)

My son's vitamin D 25 level has been increasingly low. (d25 was 16 and lowest normal value is 25) His Vitamin D 125 level is within normal ranges. His calcium is at the highest normal value. He aslo is showing a high bone turnover. Celiac disease has been ruled out and hyperparathyroid as well.

What other absorption problems for Vitamin D can be possible. And he is on 2000IU of Vitamin D a day, how dangerous is that for his Calcium levels being that they are at the highest normal value already?

Hyperparathyroid ruled out.. are you so sure?

Hi Jeanne,

I'm sorry to hear about your son. I'm curious, also, about what symptoms he's been having to make you seek treatment for him.

Also, you say that he's got increased bone turnover, but that hyperparathyroidism has been ruled out. Hmmm. Are you SURE? How do they KNOW that he doesn't have parathyroid tumors?

With a calcium level on the high end, you really should go to an endocrinologist that SPECIALIZES in parathyroid disease because parathyroid tumors are often difficult to find and many, if not most, doctors miss them- even when they are LOOKING for them!

Take a look at THE authority on parathyroid disease at Parathyroid.com. And really, you need to read all of the information very carefully, particularly the diagnosis pages. On This Diagnosis Page, scroll about half way down and compare his calcium and parathyroid levels to the ones on the chart- and if they are even CLOSE- do NOT accept anything less than a parathyroid specialist (not JUST an endocrinologist, but a parathyroid specialist)- even if you need to fly somewhere to see one because you don't want this to be missed for years and have your son get osteoporosis or other problems because the docs simply missed it.

I hope that this helps. Please let me know what happens.
