Correlation between Gluten Senisitvity and Lupus

My mother-in-law was recently diagnosed with Lupus. Could there be a link with gluten sensitivity? She also has an extremely low Vitamin D level and has been started on 50k IU per week of prescription D supplement.


Any connection with gluten there?

Hi Diane,

Your intuition is good. Yes, there is a correlation between all of these (click on the links for more information):

Gluten Sensitivity and Vitamin D Deficiency


and gluten sensitivity has a tendency to cause malabsorption of fat soluble vitamins, leading to vitamin d deficiency- so they are ALL related!! Good detective work.

Also, read why she should NOT be taking that Prescription Vitamin D and instead she should be taking Vitamin D3 Supplements.

In addition, you may want to take a look at the Magnesium and Vitamin D page to see why she should absolutely be taking magnesium with her vitamin d in order to avoid any potential side effects of the vitamin d!!

So, I hope that's not too much information all at once. Let me know if I can clarify anything...
